Judas is Turned On
Reflection:
Now, just three days from the Passion of our Lord, Jesus, the one sent by God and who is God sets in motion the events that follow. He sends Judas out to do Satans work (this is the linkage by the way between the secret whisper the press was talking about in the Gospel of Judas and our tradition note the explicit reference here After Judas took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, What you are going to do, do quickly.). The prophets words are coming to fulfillment. I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.
While this reflection is on our readings for today, I do want to mention the two verses of Johns Gospel not read today (Probably because they would dominate todays feeling and detract from the journey we are on toward Good Friday.) Notice the Gospel for today is: John 13:21-33, 36-38 It is in this moment that Jesus gives his instruction to the disciples Did you notice? Here is v. 33b : You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, Where I go you cannot come, so now I say it to you. In the reading we head today we skip v. 34-35 and go to v.36; Simon Peter said to him, Master, where are you going? Without looking now, what do you think was in those two omitted verses?
I did not remember. Here is what the Lord said to his disciples that was so important in v. 34-35:
I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Perhaps I should not have gone there right now but, to me, this is the heart of Jesus and his instructions to us. It cannot be said too many times. In fact it is said that this message was the entire message John preached for years after Jesus death while he was in the world.
But we must remember that the Lord probably said these words with outward calm but inside, the true man was seething with anxiety. He knew he had just sent Judas to do what it was fated he do.
The Lord is on the slippery slope toward his passion and we must go with him so we can rise with him at the Easter of our Joy. Let us pray we never fall to Judas role by Satans temptations.
